The Mentor Texts Writing Prompts Series is a collection of writing prompts to be used alongside various picture books. Students will practice responding to reading by writing to sources. This file includes six writing prompts designed to give students the opportunity to read a familiar mentor text, analyze a writing prompt, find text evidence, draft, revise/edit, and finally publish. The picture books that go with these prompts are great for focusing on point of view.

2. The Three Little Pigs
3. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka
4. The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt
5. Memoirs of a Goldfish by Devin Scillian (*This prompt requires students to use the book as a source, plus one additional source. The additional source is found by the students and is meant to incorporate research writing standards.)

7. Earrings by Judith Viorst
* Books 2 and 3 are used together in one prompt, so students use both sources in their writing.
