Build successful writers with strong skills by providing your students with clear writing objectives for the three types of writing tasks: opinion, informational, and narrative.
There are three rubrics included for each main type of writing in the Common Core Standards: opinion, informational, and narrative. Use them for your standards-based grading of your students’ writing. I like to review the rubric with students before having them draft so they have a clear idea of what is expected of them. Then, when I grade their writing, I staple this checklist on top and check boxes for each standard. The “on level” column in the middle contains the writing standards for their grade level. The “approaching” column has the standards from the previous grade level, and the “above” column has the writing standards from the next grade level up. This will allow you to check off each writing standard exactly where your students are in their writing skills.
The Student Publishing Pages:
But that’s only half of it! Students need to be able to internalize the writing standards as kid-friendly objectives.
To achieve this, there are also student writing pages included for each writing type.
On the bottom left corner of your students’ writing pages are checklists of the standards, and they are written in clear, student-friendly wording.
This writing duo is a must-have for providing high-quality writing instruction!
