Description
These booklets provide targeted instruction for r-controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, or, ur, air, ere, are, schwa + r) for your upper elementary students. These booklets use a variety of words (single syllable and multisyllabic) to teach and provide practice for the different r-controlled vowel sounds. Students will learn the different r-controlled sounds, and will explore and practice the pattern through a mini-lesson, independent practice, and a partner game.
Each Booklet Has:
- A mini-lesson for the teacher that breaks down the rationale for the short vowels pattern, plus linguistic connections
- Example from a Mini-Lesson: An r-controlled vowel has a vowel followed by the letter r. In r-controlled vowels, the letter r is very bossy. It changes the vowel sound so that the vowel doesn’t sound long or short. The r makes the vowel say a completely different sound. For example, say the word con out loud. Draw out the vowel sound: “c-o-n.” In this word, the vowel o makes its short sound. Now add the letter r after the o. This spells corn. Say the word corn out loud. Does the vowel o make the same sound? It now makes the r-controlled sound of /or/. That vowel doesn’t make the short vowel sound anymore. The bossy r made it change!
