This resource is for the 2.OA.4 standard: Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication.
Students will use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and 5 columns. They will write an equation to express the total as s sum of equal addends.
Second Grade Math Centers and Groups
The Math Groups Made Easy pack is the ultimate resource for math small groups and centers. Each standard pack comes with a pre-assessment, task card practice, and math games that are leveled by shape. The pre-assessment breaks down the standard into 3 different leveled questions. The teacher guide is included to help you analyze results, reveal any student misconceptions, help determine next instructional steps, and explain how to group students based on the data.
How is this resource differentiated?
The resources included in the Math Groups Made Easy packs are differentiated. The pre-assessment questions, task cards, and games are all labeled with a circle, square, and triangle.
You will be able to assign students a shape depending on their pre-assessment results. That shape becomes their independent level. When they are playing games or practicing on their own, they work through these problems. When they are with the teacher during guided math, they can be scaffolded on the next highest level (their instructional level).
- Circle: Resources marked with a circle are going to be the easiest. They include problems that are at the most basic level of the skill. Students at the circle level will need direct, explicit instruction for building the foundation for the skill.
- Square: Resources marked with a square are of moderate difficulty. These problems are going to require some basic understanding of the concept, and some application. Students at the square level will need support in getting to a higher level of application.
- Triangle: Resources marked with a triangle are going to be the highest level. These questions require students to have a solid understanding of the skill in order to apply it in challenging problems.
Resources for Both Math Centers and Guided Math
You can use the resources in this pack both as independent math center work and in guided math groups.
TASK CARDS: There are 30 task card problems with a mix of circle, square, and triangle questions. You can have students complete the problems that have their assigned shape independently. While working with you, you can use the other problems as instructional, guided practice (in addition to your district-adopted curriculum).
GAMES: The games are also differentiated and leveled by shape. Students can play games independently using the corresponding game for their independent level. You can also use the games with your guided math group by playing the game that corresponds with that group’s instructional level.
